CNNSI.com: Wednesday, January 27, 1999: 'Just friends' Kournikova shines the spotlight on Lapentti
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Surprise semifinalist Nicolas Lapentti is having fun in the publicity fishbowl, even if it means he has to keep saying "we're just friends." Lapentti's "relationship" with glamour women's player Anna Kournikova, has become more and more interesting for the media the longer he's stayed on court. The Russian teenager was in the stands for four sets of Lapentti's five-set victory over Karol Kucera, which ended in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Television cameras showed almost as much of Kournikova watching the match as the match itself. There's Anna stretching, there's Anna shaking out her long hair, there's Anna eating an ice-cream.

CNNSI.com: Thursday October 14, 1999 Kournikova: "I'll play if asked"
PALO ALTO, Calif. (Reuters) -- Although Russian Fed Cup captain Konstantin Bogorodetky said he will not add Anna Kournikova to his squad for the September final against the United States, Kournikova says she is available. "I would play if I was asked," Kournikova said. After Russia beat Slovakia 3-2 without Kournikova to reach the Fed Cup final for the first time, Bogorodetky said, "It would be completely insolent if she came to our team at this point." He added: "All the girls have done a tremendous job in reaching the final and for someone to suggest that we should replace them with Kournikova now would be a total injustice." When informed of Bogorodetky's comments, Kournikova said: "That's fine with me. I told him at the beginning of the year that there would be a very small chance of me playing the semifinal because my schedule was really tough and I needed a break after Wimbledon. The captain knew that January 1. "We'll see. I have no definite answers now."
